Aston Villa’s Tammy Abraham has talked up his partnership with Jonathan Kodjia, insisting that they could help Steve Bruce's side fly in the Championship.

Bruce brought in Abraham on loan from Chelsea towards the end of the summer transfer window, adding the England youngster to a strikeforce including Kodjia.

Kodjia scored 19 goals for Villa during the 2016/17 campaign, and despite an underwhelming goal return last season, he is still highly-rated at Villa Park.

The pair both started Tuesday’s 2-0 victory over Rotherham, with Kodjia setting up Abraham for his first goal in claret and blue.

Speaking to the Express and Star, Abraham has been quick to talk up his partnership with Kodjia, who he played alongside at Bristol City: “It is nice to have a bit of chemistry from before, from the Bristol City days. Now we are here, we have to build that connection, not just me and him but the whole team. I think we will start flying.”

There will be big pressure on Abraham and Kodjia to score the goals to fire Villa to promotion this season, but as the 20-year-old touched, their teammates will be key.

Abraham added: “Knowing our ability, we have to start producing. Everyone expects us to produce. It is never easy, week in, week out.

“When it isn’t one of us, or we are having a bad day, hopefully the team can help us out.”

Villa’s 2-0 victory over Rotherham was their third of the season, with Bruce’s side looking to back that up against Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.

The Verdict

Abraham and Kodjia are amongst the best strike partnerships in the Championship, and if Bruce can get them into a suitable system, they could be really dangerous.

It’s a big promise to say that Villa will ‘start flying’ if the duo click, but it’s easy to see where Abraham is coming from.

Both have good pedigree at this level and have the potential to do good things alongside each other.
