Bristol City's defensive record this season shows summer-signing Daniel Bentley in a bad light, but how's he actually performed at his new club?

Daniel Bentley signed for Bristol City from Brentford in the summer.

He was a favourite at Griffin Park having been the number one there for three seasons. But Lee Johnson saw his talents and pounced in the summer to bring him to Ashton Gate.

The Robins have so far enjoyed a good start to the season - they’re 6th in the Championship after 15 games, having lost just two league games all season.

They do, however, have some defensive issues:

Johnson’s side have shipped 21 league goals already this season, and the 26-year-old Bentley has kept only three clean sheets.

His ability is there for all to see - he’s a commanding force between the sticks, and a fine shot-stopper at that.

Several times this season he’s kept his side in the game, but he’s been let down by the defence in-front of him far too often.

For a team chasing a top-six spot, 21 goals conceded in 15 games is simply not good enough.

Their back-four has been hampered by several injuries earlier in the season, with Jay Dasilva still sidelined, and Tomas Kalas only returning to the first team at the weekend.

Kalas partnered Ashley Williams in defence against Barnsley last Friday, in a game which epitomises Bristol’s season so far.

Bristol held a 2-0 lead with 20 minutes of the tie at Oakwell remaining.

In true Robins fashion though, Barnsley bagged a couple of late goals to steal a point, with Bristol again missing the chance to progress up the Championship table - It was Bristol’s 7th draw of the season already.

Bentley has proved a solid signing for Bristol so far and despite the numbers, which don’t make for good reading for the keeper, will be a huge player for Johnson as his side look to land a top-six spot come May.

Johnson needs to instil some solidity into his side, they need to learn how to hold out a lead - if they can do that, there’s no knowing how well they’ll do this season.
