It has been a busy summer at Barnsley as Daniel Stendel prepares his side for their Championship return following automatic promotion from League One last season.

The Tykes finished second in the third tier during Stendel's first season in charge, which meant they immediately bounced back from relegation to enjoy a successful campaign.

Stendel's men boasted the best defence in the division as they stormed to promotion, but such an impressive record has meant they have lost a number of key men over the summer to other Championship club.

However, the club have also worked hard to bring in players during the off-season which has led to a high squad turnover at Oakwell during the summer months.

It has been a mixed transfer window for Tykes fans, so in today's FLW Six Pointer, we assess Barnsley ahead of the new campaign...

Firstly, who have been the main casualties from the Barnsley squad after last season's success?

The Barnsley back-line conceded just 39 goals throughout last season as they earned promotion, so it will come as no surprise to learn that the club have been raided of their defensive unit in the close-season.

Long-serving goalkeeper Adam Davies saw his impressive performances earn him a call-up to the Wales national side earlier this year, but his Tykes contract expired this summer and he has since been snapped up by Stoke.

Furthermore, centre-back duo Liam Lindsay and Ethan Pinnock have also departed Oakwell. Lindsay has followed Davies to the Potteries, while Pinnock has joined Brentford where he will link up with last season's PFA Team of the Year member Pontus Jansson.

How big an impact will these departures have on Stendel's side?

It's hard to say at this early stage, but there can be no denying that losing these three players would have been Barnsley supporters' worst nightmare heading into the summer window.

Barnsley had no goalscoring shortage last term, but their success was built off a solid foundation at the back. Davies, Lindsay and Pinnock were all extremely settled at the club and had established themselves as the key figureheads in Barnsley's defence.

Stendel has taken strides to replace the outgoing players in the window, but there surely be some difficult times ahead as the new recruits aim to replace such an impressive trio.

Who will replace these key defensive figures next term?

Stendel added goalkeeper Brad Collins to his ranks as a precaution before Davies' departure, and Barnsley fans have every reason to be excited about this incoming.

Collins arrives on a free transfer from Chelsea after establishing himself as the number-one choice during loan spells at Forest Green Rovers and Burton Albion in recent seasons. Meanwhile, the club have also added Samuel Sahin-Radlinger to their ranks.

In front of the goalkeeper could be any two of the arriving centre-back trio Aapo Halme, Bambo Diaby and Mads Juel Andersen. These three players have arrived from Leeds United, KSC Lokeren and AC Horsens respectively, but they are  lacking any significant Championship experience.

However, Halme and Andersen are both highly-regarded defenders so could prove to be adequate replacements, but there will possibly be some difficult moments while they both adapt to starting regularly in the division.

Where else have the Tykes added players?

Stendel has also added a range of attacking players to his ranks, complimenting the strike duo of Cauley Woodrow and Kieffer Moore who were prolific in League One last term.

Luke Thomas has arrived on a permanent deal from Derby County after impressing on the wing during his loan spell at Coventry City last term, while his former Sky Blues teammate Conor Chaplin has also been added to the Tykes' attack.

Barnsley have also secured a permanent move for Mike-Steven Bahre after he was an integral figure in midfield while on loan from Hannover 96 last term. There should also be excitement surrounding the addition of Mallik Wilks who joins from Leeds after scoring 16 goals in 53 appearances for League One play-off semi-finalists Doncaster Rovers last season. The Tykes have also added former AFC Wimbledon full-back Toby Sibbick to the side.

Any other notable business?

The Tykes have been boosted by a number of big-name players signing new contracts this summer with midfielder Cameron McGeehan and Woodrow both penning long-term deals, while striker Jacob Brown has also put pen to paper.

However, there has been speculation surrounding the future of target man Kieffer Moore following his impressive goalscoring record last term and Millwall and Bristol City are both keen on the striker's services.

Additionally, Stendel chose to create further room in his squad by offloading the likes of Ryan Hedges, Zeki Fryers, Lloyd Isgrove and Adam Jackson following the conclusion of last season.

Finally, can we call this a successful window for Barnsley?

It's been a real mixed bag so far, and the impact of the defensive departures will only really become clear when we see how they adapt to the Championship.

I don't think this can be considered a successful window given the high-profile departures, but I do feel that Stendel has recruited well with a number of exciting additions.

The Tykes will look particularly strong in attack if they can hold on to Moore in the remainder of the window, and I think they could have just enough firepower to mount a serious survival fight next term.
