Bristol City defender Ashley Williams has provided an update on his contract situation at Ashton Gate following an impressive start to life at the club this campaign.

The Robins initially signed Williams on a short-term deal back in August, but his strong defensive performances have recently led to the south-west club extending his services until the end of the season.

The Wales international has now made 14 consecutive league appearances for Lee Johnson's side who are currently sitting fourth in the Championship table, with their 2-1 win over Fulham over the weekend serving as a reflection of their promotion credentials.

Williams' importance to the Bristol City side has led to some focus on his long-term future at the club, but the defender has now claimed that this is not something on his mind with the current season ongoing.

"I’m just trying to enjoy this season, the games comes thick and fast I haven’t thought at all about next season," he told Bristol Live.

However, Williams has confessed that his excellent run of form in the Robins side has meant that is enjoying his football more than he has in the last few years, which have seen him struggle for consistency while playing for Everton and Stoke.

"I haven’t enjoyed football like this for a few years to be honest," he said.

The Verdict

Williams has definitely exceeded expectations following his arrival at Bristol City, with the fact he has been handed a contract extension by the club acting as a firm reflection of his of his importance to Johnson's side.

There would have been doubts over Williams ability to still perform at Championship level prior to his Ashton Gate switch, but his recent form suggests he is still capable of providing a strong defensive presence for the foreseeable future.

The Robins would have no reason to not extend the defender's contract beyond the current season if he continues delivering these strong performances at a consistent rate.
