The summer transfer window will close at the end of the month, with a number of Sky Bet Championship sides still looking to complete loan deals over the course of this week.

A transfer saga has developed between Nottingham Forest and Blackburn Rovers, with the latter in hot pursuit of Ben Brereton, who currently finds himself on the fringe at the City Ground.

Brereton is highly-rated at Forest, but it appears that Blackburn will land their man over the next 48 hours, with the striker heading to Ewood Park on loan, before that deal is made permanent in January.

According to John Percy at the Telegraph, a £7m fee has been agreed for the 19-year-old’s service, with a deal edging closer to completion.

For Forest’s supporters, they should be disappointed and worried by their club’s short-sightedness here.

Brereton isn’t a prolific goalscorer, with the striker’s number since he broke into the first-team really disappointing.

In 53 Championship appearances, Brereton has returned just eight league goals for the Reds, with only five of those coming last season in 35 appearances.

That kind of record isn’t enough to fire Forest into promotion contention, but Aitor Karanka has brought the likes of Lewis Grabban in to score those goals.

With Grabban’s arrival, Brereton has been frozen out, and now, looks to be heading for the exit door, which will be seen as a huge mistake to some.

Brereton is 19 and has his best ahead of him.

In time, he could become a really good striker, who just looks like he needs the right coaching to really starting fulfilling his potential. For Forest to be letting him go in this fashion is a risk, as if Brereton does start fulfilling that potential, £7m is going to look like a bargain.

Grabban is 30, whilst Daryl Murphy, another striker Karanka has played this season, is 35. Of course, that duo are more likely to score the goals Forest need to get them promoted, but it’s certainly a show of the club’s short-sighted approach this summer, with little thought given to the future.

Letting Brereton go highlights that further.
