It's safe to say that it's not been the season that many Scunthorpe United fans would have first hoped for, with Paul Hurst's side only picking up seven points from their opening twelve league games in League Two.

It'll be even more frustrating for the club's supporters as they would have been keen to make an immediate return to League One, following their relegation from England's third tier last season.

In our latest FLW Six Pointer, we look into their poor start to this year's league campaign in more detail.

Firstly, how bad has this season been for Scunthorpe?

"It's been almost as bad as it gets for the Iron.

"Scunthorpe currently sit 22nd in the League Two table, and might be lucky that only one team is relegated out of the Football League this season, as they might find one or two team worse than them.

"They've only won once this term in the league, which came against relegation candidates Morecambe in September."

What would the pre-season expectation have been this season?

"The pre-season expectation would have been to win promotion back into League One.

"I think that's why their shocking start to the season has caught many by surprise, as they've certainly got quality players at this level on their books at the moment.

"They'll have to show an improvement in results as soon as possible, as Paul Hurst could be facing questions over his future in charge of the club in the near future."

Which players are struggling for form?

"The likes of Kevin van Veen have already shown that they can score goals at League One level, but with just two goals to his name in this year's campaign, it shows that he's not quite hit his best form in front of goal for the Iron.

"But the main concern for Paul Hurst's side will be their leaky defence, which has only kept one clean sheet so far this season, which shows that their defence need to tighten up at the earliest of opportunities.

"They didn't lose as many players as I thought they would after they were relegated, and this current crop of players need to recapture their best form, otherwise Scunthorpe could be in real trouble."

Is Paul Hurst the man to turn their poor run of form around?

"I think he needs to be given time to improve results.

"When I first heard that he had taken over as Scunthorpe's new manager in May, I thought that he would be the perfect person to guide them back into League One at the first time of asking.

"He struggled with Ipswich Town earlier in his managerial career, but impressive stints at both Grimsby Town and Shrewsbury Town show that he can cut it in the lower leagues.

"Patience is required, as a rash decision in sacking him could be the final nail in the coffin for Scunthorpe's status as a Football League club."

What has been the main reason behind their dismal start to this year's campaign?

"Their away form has been hugely disappointing.

"There's not been a lot to shout for in general this season for Scunthorpe supporters, but their performances on the road have been particularly disappointing.

"Hurst's side have only picked up a point away this term, which means that they have the worst record on their travels out of all of the teams in League Two.

"Unless they show some more resilience in defence away from home, then they could be in a spot of bother as the season progresses."

Finally, do you think they'll be relegated out of the Football League this season?

"I think they'll have enough about them to survive.

"It seems to me as though it's more of a confidence thing with the Scunthorpe players this season, who hadn't had that winning-mentality much in last year's campaign as they were relegated out of League One.

"There are some good players in that squad, but Paul Hurst needs to be given time to get the best out of them in the fourth tier of English football.

"Some patience is required, but I think the likes of Morecambe and Stevenage are more likely to be facing the drop compared to Scunthorpe this season."
