Arsenal and Everton are interested in a deal for Middlesbrough winger Marcus Tavernier, according to reports in The Daily Mail.

The 18-year-old bagged the winner in the Tees-Wear derby prior to the international break, having broken into the first team fold under boss Garry Monk this season.

The teenage sensation was rewarded for his fine club form with a first international call-up, making appearances against the Faroe Islands, Bulgaria and Iceland for England’s successful U-19 side.

Scoring against Bournemouth in the League Cup earlier this season, Tavernier has emerged as the most exciting young talent on the books at The Riverside Stadium, with the club keen to trigger a one-year extension to the player’s current deal.

The Mail reports that Bournemouth and Aston Villa are also interested, with scouts from all four sides having watched the player in action this season.

The Verdict

Interested in Tavernier was always expected to rise following his electric start to the season, and the youngster is certainly becoming one of the brightest young talents in the Football League.

Boro fans will not be surprised to see their young star linked with a Premier League move, but reported interest from giants Arsenal may raise some eyebrows at the club.

Tavernier has made just six first team appearances so far, and has a long way to go before he becomes the finished article, and this must be achieved with Boro at this stage of his career.

A January move to sit on a Premier League bench would not be the right career choice for this youngster, with a couple more years on Teesside the sensible option.
