Sunderland are keen to take Arsenal youngster Joe Willock to the Stadium of Light, but any loan move away from the Emirates has been blocked by the club.

The Gunners have told Championship clubs that none of their players are available on loan, according to Football London. Willock is one of the players who might have featured in a temporary switch this winter, but there's now a block on such a move by the hierarchy.

That might not deter Sunderland who see the 19-year old midfielder as an interesting addition to their own ranks. Willock impressed in the FA Cup recently, scoring twice as Blackpool were beaten 3-0, but he's also bagged twice for the Under 23 side in the EFL Trophy.

He's capped up to England Under 20 level and a permanent move might seem a little beyond Sunderland's reach, but if his opportunities are set to be limited coming into the second half of the season, Jack Ross will surely keep him at the back of his mind.

The Verdict

On the face of it, the news seems to be bad for Sunderland. Willock surely won't be moving away permanently, but his first team chances are limited.

There might be a block on such loans now, but Sunderland must remain keen and focused. As the month ebbs away, there's sure to be an opening if Arsenal truly want the player to develop.
