Huddersfield Town are set to announce the signing of Arsenal youngster Emile Smith-Rowe on-loan until the end of the season, according to Sky Sports.

The Terriers headed into his transfer window looking to bolster their squad ahead of a battle against relegation in the second half of the season. Following the appointment of Danny and Nicky Cowley, Huddersfield went through a mini-resurgence before a huge spate of injuries in November and December.

This injury crisis left Cowley with just the bare bones of his squad to pick from along with a bunch of youngster making debuts in the Championship, with a poor run seeing them slump to 20th in the table, but still five points clear of the bottom three.

The Terriers now need to use January to help build their squad back up in the wake of injuries and other departures in the summer, with Cowley getting his first chance to recruit at the John Smith’s Stadium.

One player who is now on the verge of completing a move to Kirklees is Arsenal midfielder Emile Smith-Rowe, who is expected to seal a loan move today to Huddersfield for the rest of the season, according to Sky Sports (Transfer Centre, 12:40).

The 19-year-old has impressed under both Unai Emery and Mikel Arteta this season, making three Europa League appearances this term and two Premier League appearances.

Smith-Rowe would come in and be expected to be a key part of Cowley’s first-team for the rest of the season, especially given their alarming lack of depth at the moment.

The Verdict

This could be a very good deal for Huddersfield to sign one of Arsenal’s leading young talents for the rest of the season.

A very versatile midfielder with great technical ability could be what they need in the final third, with Alex Pritchard struggling to stay fit and few other players showcasing that ability so far.

Smith-Rowe will be getting his first taste of regular football at Huddersfield and this will be a great move for all parties if all goes well.
