Arsenal and France legend Thierry Henry has emerged as a shock candidate for the manager's job at Aston Villa, should the new owners choose to dispense with the services of Steve Bruce.

Following Friday's announcement that a consortium from Egypt is to take over at Villa Park, the Daily Mail reports that the World Cup winner could be in line to take his first managerial role.

Egyptian Nassef Sawiris, with a personal fortune of nearly £5bn, and business partner Wes Edens, co-owner of the Milwaukee Bucks, are looking to inject 'significant investment' into the Championship side, with a new manager thought to be likely.

Henry has recently been playing a key role in the back room staff for Roberto Martinez as Belgium finished third in the World Cup, plus he recently stepped down as a pundit to focus on his managerial career.

40-year old Henry scored 228 goals for Arsenal in 376 appearances across all competitions, as well as winning a World Cup and European Championship with France.

The Verdict

In terms of their financial peril, there could be light at the end of the tunnel, but reports of Henry taking his first manager's role at Villa might make fans sceptical.

Villa need consistency, they need experience to ensure they climb back into the top flight. Henry never played his football outside the top division of any country.
