Arsenal have agreed to play their Carabao Cup third round tie with Nottingham Forest on a Tuesday as a gesture of goodwill to the Championship side, the Daily Mail have reported.

Playing on Tuesday means that the game comes just 48 hours after Arsenal's 3-2 Premier League win over Aston Villa on Sunday, with the six other top-flight sides to have played on Sunday not in Cup action until Wednesday night.

According to the latest reports however, Arsenal have agreed to play their meeting with Forest at the Emirates a day earlier, in order to allow Sabri Lamouchi's side the best possible chance to prepare for their league game with Stoke City on Friday night.

Holding the cup tie on Wednesday would have left Forest with a significantly shorter turnaround for their clash with the Potters, and it is thought that the reduced turnaround for the Gunners from Sunday is seen as the lesser of two evils by all parties.

Forest currently sit sixth in the Championship after eight league games of the season, and a win over Stoke - who are also in cup action away at League Two Crawley on Tuesday night - would see Lamouchi's men go top of the second tier ahead of the rest of the weekend's games.

After the cup tie, Arsenal have a much longer turnaround period than Forest, with the Gunners not then in action until Monday night, when they travel to Old Trafford to face Manchester United.

The Verdict

I think this is probably something that suits everyone best.

Given the much longer turnaround period Arsenal have after this game, you feel this will impact the Gunners less than it would Forest were the game to be played on Wednesday night.

You also feel that the strength in depth Arsenal have in their squad means they should be capable of rotating here from Sunday here in a way that keeps this game competitive, which is what you imagine the vast majority of spectators will want to see.

It will be interesting to see how the schedule affects these two lineups here, and this does feel like a reminder of the challenges that TV picks can present to teams when it comes to managing a side, despite the obvious financial benefits they bring.
