Freddie Ljungberg has remained tight-lipped when questioned about Eddie Nketiah's future at Leeds United.

The striker is currently on loan from Arsenal but has struggled for regular starts at Elland Road with Patrick Bamford being Marcelo Bielsa's preferred option in attack.

Reports have suggested that the Gunners could look to bring the striker back to the Emirates Stadium next month before finding another destination for him to spend the rest of the season on loan.

Ljungberg was discussing Nketiah's future and hinted that the player could be better off in North London if he's not going to be getting regular gametime.

Speaking to the press, as quoted by Football London, he said: "I need to be careful but I think Eddie is a great player.

"If he goes on loan we want him to play football and get minutes otherwise they (players out on loan) can maybe be here. We want them to be on loan to get minutes.

"I feel a bit sorry for him because he is a great player and the future of this club. When he has had his chance he scores goals and that’s what he is about."

Ljungberg added: "I’ve been calling him (throughout the season) and he texted me as well two days ago.

"Like I said I go on a game to game basis but you asked for my opinion and that’s my opinion."

The verdict

Eddie Nketiah looks set to be a huge talking point over the next month or so.

The striker hasn't featured anywhere near as much as he'd have liked during his loan spell at Elland Road, meaning that he's unlikely to be happy at the current arrangement.

What the future holds remains to be seen for the striker but it doesn't look like it'll be good news for Leeds United.
