Holgate, 18, who operates as a right-back in the Tykes defence has been a prevalent figure in the squad this season, and his impressive performances have caught the eye of clubs from the top-flight.

The Barnsley full-back signed a professional contract at the Sky Bet League One outfit in September, and has since been watched by numerous scouts from Premier League clubs.

Tykes Academy manager, Ronnie Branson said to the Mirror: “Mason is a bright and intelligent player. He’s a good centre-half and we have high hopes for him to progress. We’ve had interest from other Clubs for Mason."

Holgate is not the only player from the Football League that the Gunners are interested in, with them also holding an interest in Ipswich Town full-back Tyrone Mings, as reported on FLW.

The 18-year-old has been at Barnsley since the age of nine, so it would be a significant change in his life if he was signed by one of the Premier League clubs.

It is very likely that if a move did occur between Barnsley and one of the interested clubs, he would be signed on a permanent deal and then subsequently loaned back to Barnsley for the remainder of the season.

Barnsley are enduring an inconsistent season in Sky Bet League One and currently sit in 16th position in Sky Bet League One, having accumulated 26 points from 22 league games.

Holgate is among a number of Football League youngsters who are being touted for big moves to Premier League clubs, with most notably, Birmingham winger Demarai Gray and MK Dons midfielder Dele Alli both set for a move to the top-flight soon.
