Norwich City goalkeeper John Ruddy is a transfer target for Premier League sides Arsenal and Sunderland, according to FLW sources.
Ruddy has been subject to interest from England’s top clubs for the past two summers, but has always remained at Norwich. However, with the club playing in the Championship next season, he is likely to seek a return to the Premier League.
Arsenal are on the lookout for a new goalkeeper after it was announced this morning that Lukasz Fabianski had left the Emirates to join Swansea City.
Should Ruddy go to Arsenal, he would provide fresh competition for current first choice Wojciech Szczesny.
Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is an admirer of the one-time England international, who missed out on this summer’s World Cup squad to Ben Foster, and was yesterday reported to have made a £6 million bid for the shot stopper.
Sunderland are also interested in the 27-year-old after releasing goalkeepers Kieren Westwood and Oscar Ustari, and the Black Cats will look to test Norwich’s resolve with a similar sized offer.
Ruddy, who has made over 125 appearances for the Canaries since joining from Everton in 2010, signed a new 3-year-contract with the club in October and earlier this month pledged his allegiance to Norwich:
“I’m not a quitter, definitely not. I signed a new contract with Norwich in October and I’ve got three seasons left on that contract.
“The situation is the same as it was last summer. There was a bit of interest from Chelsea, but Norwich didn’t receive a bid they deemed acceptable. If that’s the same case this summer then I’ve no problem with that. I’m very happy at Norwich. My family are very settled. Unless the club turn around to me and say we’ve accepted an offer for you, then I’ll be a Norwich player come next season.
“Norwich fans are fantastic. They’ve been very good with me. I had a tough time when I first joined here and they could easily have turned against me but they stuck by me, and I would like to think I have repaid their faith.”
Crystal Palace could also be chasing the former Cambridge United trainee. Eagles goalkeeper Julian Speroni is yet to agree a new deal at Selhurst Park and reports are linking him with a move elsewhere – most notably Sunderland. Should Speroni decide to leave, it would pave the way for Ruddy to make the move to London.
As well as Ruddy, Arsenal are also rumoured to be interested in Cardiff goalkeeper David Marshall and Reading’s Alex McCarthy.
