Wolverhampton Wanderers are one of three Premier League clubs watching Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy ahead of a possible summer move, according to a report by The Mirror.

Arsenal and Liverpool are also considering McCarthy, who has impressed in recent displays for Southampton.

The 28-year-old has played an instrumental role in the Saints' revival under Mark Hughes, helping his side to safety in the Premier League.

Although it is not yet confirmed, it looks likely that the south coast club will stay in the Premier League unless there is a remarkable goal swing in theirs and Swansea's game.

Liverpool, Arsenal and Wolves have all watched McCarthy in recent weeks as they ponder a move.

Liverpool are hoping that he can come in and compete with Loris Karius with Simon Mignolet expected to leave, while Arsenal are looking for a long-term replacement for Petr Cech.

Wolves goalkeeper John Ruddy won the golden glove in the Championship this summer but Nuno Espirito Santo is looking to bring in a new stopper this summer.

Jack Butland has been mentioned as a possibility while Rui Patricio is another reported target for the West Midlands outfit.

But former England under-21 international McCarthy, formerly of Reading, QPR and Crystal Palace, is also on their radar.

The Verdict

McCarthy is experienced but also has a good five years or more in the prime of his career.

While Ruddy has been dependable for Wolves this season, they need more competition for places in that position and McCarthy could be a shrewd acquisition.

Arsenal and Liverpool will tempt the England international hopeful but Wolves would be able to offer him more playing guarantees.
