Cardiff City have signed West Brom midfielder Romaine Sawyers.

The Bluebirds have signed the Saint Kitts and Nevis international.

The 30-year-old midfielder was a free agent after recently departing West Brom at the end of his contract.

With the above in mind, we asked some of our writers here at FLW for their thoughts on Sawyers becoming a Bluebird this summer.

Cardiff are not wasting any time this summer, and with Steve Morison looking to implement a more possession-based brand of football in the Welsh capital, Romaine Sawyers is as good as you are going to get on a free.

The St Kitts and Nevis international was arguably the classiest midfielder in the Championship, maybe apart from Kalvin Phillips, as West Bromwich Albion sealed automatic promotion from the second tier in 2019/20, and there were flashes of Sawyers’ brilliance in a loan spell at Stoke City last season.

With Tommy Doyle returning to Manchester City and joining Sheffield United on loan this summer, Sawyers would go a long way to replacing what he offered at the heart of midfield in the second half of last term.

This could go on to be one of the shrewdest pieces of business in the entire window.

This could turn out to be a really good bit of business by the club.

Blessed with a wealth of experience, the midfielder knows exactly what it takes to succeed in the Championship as he had made 194 appearances in this division during his career.

During his loan spell at Stoke City last season, Sawyers showed glimpses of his ability as he provided five direct goal contributions in the second-tier.

Providing that the 30-year-old is able to maintain his fitness over the course of the upcoming campaign, there is no reason why he cannot become a key player for the Bluebirds.”

This does feel as though it could be a very good signing for Cardiff.12

With the likes of Marlon Pack and Will Vaulks having moved on this summer, the Bluebirds do look as though they could benefit from the addition of some further options in the centre of the park for next season.

Sawyers obviously provides them with that, and the fact he is a proven Championship player could be useful, given a number of those who have been brought into the club this summer do not have experience of this level.

The fact he is available on a free transfer is also helpful for Cardiff from a financial perspective as they look to get a number of deal done this summer, meaning this does look to be one that is well worth pursuing for Steve Morison's side.
