Now in their third straight season in the Premier League, Brighton have certainly defied a few expectations since making the step up to the top-flight in 2017.
The Seagulls have been largely comfortable in keeping clear of the relegation zone during their time in the Premier League so far, although they are looking over their shoulders somewhat this season.
Part of the reason for their success in recent years has been the impact of the signings they brought in, first to win that promotion from the Championship, and then to establish themselves in the Premier League.
However, not every bit of recruitment Brighton have made over the years has been all that successful, with a number of signings failing to impress.
Here we take a look at six of the worst Brighton signings we've seen the Seagulls make over the years.
Having joined Brighton for a club record-fee from Dutch outfit AZ Alkmaar back in the summer of 2018, it has taken Jahanbakhsh quite some time to get going at the AMEX.
The Iranian failed to score or provide a single assist during 19 appearances in his debut season for the club, and he was also slow to get going in the current campaign, although two well-taken goals against Bournemouth and Chelsea - a spectacular bicycle kick - have shown glimpses of what he can do, and prevent him being further up this list.
A poor work rate and disappointing goals return mean that Best has never really endeared himself to the fans of any of the clubs he has been at, and Brighton is no different in that sense.
Having joined the Seagulls on loan from then-Championship rivals Blackburn during the second half of the 2014-15 season, Best failed to find the net even once during his time with the club, and it was no surprise to see that Brighton did not look to make the striker's move permanent the following summer, when he was also released by Rovers.
Joining from Bundesliga side Mainz in the summer of 2018, Balogun has never really been able to impress during his time at Brighton.
The centre back made just 12 appearances in a season half at the AMEX before being loaned out to Wigan on the final day of the most recent January transfer window, although he has at least gone on to become a useful asset for the Latics in their battle against relegation from the Championship.
Agustien is someone who rather fits the definition of a journeyman, although his time at Brighton is perhaps not one he would like to remember from his career.
Joining on a two-year deal in the summer of 2013, both the player and fans will have been left frustrated by Agustien's contribution at Brighton, with injuries restricting the midfielder to just 13 appearances over the course of those two seasons at the AMEX, before he was released at the end of his contract.
Signed from Spanish outfit Deportivo in the summer of 2018 for a reported €6million, Andone has yet to really start repaying that investment to the Seagulls.
Since his move to England, the attacker has scored just four goals in 26 league appearances for Brighton, and after being heavily criticised after being sent off for a shocking challenge on Southampton's Yan Valery at the start of this season, Andone was sent out on loan to Turkey with Galatasaray, where he has since scored twice in 11 games in all competitions.
Someone with an even bigger price tag than Andone, who has struggled just as much if not more to start paying back on that investment, is Jurgen Locadia.
Joining from Dutch giants PSV Eindhoven in the 2018 January transfer window, Locadia has scored just three goals in 34 appearances for the Seagulls. The attacker joined Hoffenheim on a season-long loan last summer, but saw that deal cut short in January following an improved return of four goals in 12 games, with the Dutchman now heading to America to join FC Cincinnati on a temporary basis when football resumes.
