After a promising start to the 2019/20 season, this has turned into a rather difficult campaign for Hull City.

Grant McCann's side dropped down the Championship table, and they now find themselves battling the drop.

It seems therefore, as though Hull are going to need to do some serious work when the transfer window reopens in order to get their side looking up rather than down again.

However, as history shows, even that has now guarantee of working for the Tigers, given there have been some thoroughly disappointing pieces of recruitment by the club in recent years.

Here, we take a look at six of the worst signings we've seen Hull make.

Hull reportedly beat out Championship rivals Birmingham and Charlton to sign Marcus Maddison on loan from Peterborough in January, although they might be wishing they hadn't bothered.

Since arriving at the KCOM Stadium, Maddison has seemingly struggled to make the step up to the Championship from League One, looking somewhat off the pace and scoring just once in seven appearances as Hull's struggles continue, with reports already claiming that the Tigers will not be making his move permanent in the summer.

Joining from Celta Vigo on a four-year deal for a reported £2million, things started well for Ghilas, as he scored the only goal of the game in a 1-0 win over Bolton on his debut.

That was a good as things got for Ghilas at Hull, with the striker failing to find the net again in 15 more appearances for the Tigers, before spending the following two season on loan in France with Arles and Reims, joining the latter on a permanent basis in the summer of 2012.

Halmosi joined Hull from Plymouth for a then club-record £2million in the summer of 2008, but failed to really live up to that billing.

The midfielder made just 27 appearances in total during his time with the Tigers - scoring once in FA Cup win over Sheffield United - before being loaned out to Hungarian side Haladas in 2010, Halmosi had his contract cut short by 18 months when it was terminated in January 2011, after which he rejoined Haladas on a permanent basis.

Joining on loan from Stoke late in the 2009 summer transfer window, Sonko's spell with Hull did little to live up to his past impressive form with the likes of Reading.

Two of the defender's first three games for Hull saw them concede four to Sunderland and six to Liverpool, and Sonko would make just nine league appearances in total that season as the Tigers were relegated from the top flight. Not surprisingly, his move wasn't made permanent.

Another to make the move from Stoke to Hull in the summer of 2009 was Seyi Olofinjana, who joined for a reported £3million.

The midfielder was another who struggled as Hull dropped back into the Championship, at which point he joined Cardiff on-loan for the 2010/11 season. Injuries then restricted him to just five appearances during the 2011/12 campaign, and Olofinjana never really forced his way back into the side the year after, before being released in the summer of 2013 when his contract came to an end.

Signing a 36-year-old striker with seven goals in the last two seasons is unlikely to excite many fans, but Hull nonetheless did just that when they recruited Dele Adebola from Nottingham Forest in June 2011.

Ultimately those fans would have been right not to be excited. Adebola started just twice for the Tigers, made eight more substitute appearances and failed to score before being loaned to Notts County in March 2012, and was released by the Tigers at the end of the season just a few months later.
