Massimo Cellino’s first summer as Leeds United’s owner was an eventful one, with a number of foreign signings and the appointment of Dave Hockaday.

Leeds’ 2014/15 campaign proved to be a disappointing one after a summer of change and a bizarre managerial appointment, with the Whites eventually stumbling to mid-table under Neil Redfearn.

A lot of that season’s squad was made up of European players, with Cellino raiding the lower leagues in Italy.

Amongst the players brought to Elland Road was Mirco Antenucci, who arrived from Ternana. Leeds handed the then 30-year-old a two-year contract.

Antenucci was a pacey forward, who stretched defences and got supporters on the edge of their seats. However, he was another player to pass through Elland Road and cause controversy.

The Italian was involved in the infamous ‘sicknote six’ at the end of the 2014/15 campaign, which is something that overshadows whatever he achieved on the field.

Leeds kept Antenucci on board the following season, though, with the 2015/16 campaign returning nine goals – an impressive return in another mid-table finish.

After that season Antenucci left England, having made 75 appearances in the Championship and returned 19 goals.

There’s little doubt that Antenucci was a useful player during his two years at Elland Road, but he was part of an unsuccessful squad and proved to be quite controversial.

In our latest FLW Rewind, we take a look back at the day Antenucci signed for Leeds, with the club’s supporters as divided then as the day he departed Elland Road…
