‘Another example of how dreadful our recruitment is’ – Many Sunderland fans frustrated by one man in Plymouth defeat

Sunderland were beaten 2-1 by Plymouth Argyle last night and many Black Cats fans have been left frustrated by defender Callum McFadzean’s performance.
Adam Lewis converted a low cross to give the visitors the lead inside 11 minutes at the Stadium of Light with Aiden O’Brien nodding Lee Johnson’s side level just after the half.
That didn’t last long, however, as Joe Edwards put Plymouth back into the lead five minutes later and the Black Cats were unable to provide a response.
Both of Argyle’s goals came from attacks down the left-back’s flank in what was a poor game for McFadzean defensively.
The 27-year-old won just one defensive duel, did not register one blocked shot, clearance, interception, or tackle, and lost possession 17 times in total (Sofascore).
He did make an impact going the other way, however, as it was his curled cross that O’Brien headed in for the equaliser.
The defender was replaced by Elliot Embleton, a central midfielder by trade, after 71 minutes – illustrating what Johnson thought of his display.

McFadzean is first-choice at left-back due to Denver Hume’s current injury but it doesn’t seem as though the Stadium of Light faithful were impressed by his performance last night.

Tonight was very League one Sunderland. Mcfadzean is another example of how dreadful our recruitment is. He simply cannot defend and is barely good enough for League 2. This season is basically a right off now. Clean the deck in the summer and start again. #Safc

I’m not surprised in the slightest that Plymouth gave Mcfadzean away for free!
What a laughing stock we are. #SAFC

McFadzean is a truly dreadful defender. At fault for both goals. #SAFC

I was one to praise McFadzean and thought he looked an upgrade on Hume, but what a terrible defender he truly is.
At fault for both goals. Signing a left back is essential #SAFC

He’s no use, poor defensively and looks worse going forward. Embleton will be playing there on Saturday.

Have issues at left back … again #safc McFadzean absolutely no where near where he is ment to be there #shocking defending

I can confidently say I haven't seen a worse ball striker than Josh Scowen. McFadzean shocking defending all game but a nice assist. Winchester very poor and was rightly hooked. Disappointing performance #SAFC
