Sunderland have revealed that seven first team players will depart the Stadium of Light this summer including Chris Maguire and Grant Leadbitter.
Lee Johnson’s side are licking their wounds following play-off disappointment over the weekend against Lincoln City, with Sunderland now facing a fourth consecutive season in League One.
A club statement on the back of the conclusion of the 2020/21 campaign has confirmed that Maguire and Leadbitter, alongside Callum McFadzean, Conor McLaughlin, Max Power, Josh Scowen and Remi Matthews, will leave the Stadium of Light at the expiration of their contracts.
What club do these 21 former Sunderland players ply their trade at now?
Aiden McGeady, Denver Hume and Luke O’Nien will be offered new deals, whilst discussions are ongoing with Charlie Wyke over new terms. Others, including a certain Will Grigg, have returned to the Stadium of Light and remain under contract for 2021/22.
As you might expect, there was a sea of reaction from the Sunderland fans in response to that statement, with plenty of disappointment still seeping out following more play-off heartache.
Maguire, Leadbitter and even Grigg were the main points of discussion:
Sorry Will Grigg is still on the team??? Don't know why I thought he was gone… never mind.

Power Leadbitter Scowen
Possibly the worst midfield in Sunderland history. Glad to see the back of them plus hopefully a few more get sold like Grigg, Dobson and Flanagan
