Thomas Christiansen’s sacking at Leeds United came as a surprise to nobody, with the Whites struggling to maintain their play-off push under the Dane’s management.

Vital for Leeds has been the club’s reaction to that sacking, with the Whites swiftly moving to appoint Paul Heckingbottom as Christiansen’s successor, with the former Barnsley boss arriving at Elland Road on an 18-month contract until the summer of 2019.

Heckingbottom, 40, has been with Barnsley for two years, leading the Tykes from League One to the Championship – even managing to oversee a 14th placed finish on the club’s return to the second-tier last year.

This season, Barnsley are struggling above the relegation zone, with Heckingbottom departing for Elland Road, where he will inherit a Leeds squad that sit 10th, with their play-off hopes fading fast.

Heckingbottom is set to take charge of his first game against Sheffield United on Saturday.
