It's safe to say that it's not been a season to remember for Barnsley supporters this term at Oakwell.

The Tykes currently occupy one of the relegation spots in the Championship heading into the international break, with that poor run of form leading to Daniel Stendel being dismissed from his role in charge of the Tykes.

The 45-year-old wasn't given a considerable amount of funds during the summer to strengthen his squad, but one player that did arrive ahead of the 2019/20 campaign was Mallik Wilks.

The 20-year-old only made one senior appearance for Leeds United before signing for Barnsley on a permanent basis, which certainly came as a surprise to some of the Elland Road faithful.

Wilks had made a name for himself into the lower leagues of the Football League, most notably for Doncaster Rovers in the 2018/19 season.

The forward scored 14 goals in total for Donny in League One, and Barnsley supporters will have been keen to see similar performances from Wilks in front of goal this season.

But that hasn't been the case, with Wilks scoring just one league goal for the Tykes, as they look to settle into life in the Championship.

He's not been played in his central striking role though for Barnsley this term, and it will be interesting to see whether he returns to his normal role when a new manager comes in over the international break.

Wilks has made seven league starts for the Yorkshire-based side, and faces tough competition for his starting spot, with the likes of Cauley Woodrow and Mamadou Thiam challenging him for a place ini the squad.

The Oakwell faithful will be hoping that Wilks can recapture his best form in front of goal, otherwise the Tykes could be facing an immediate relegation straight back into League One by the end of the season.

Plenty of Barnsley supporters had high-hopes for Wilks when he first arrived at the club in the summer transfer window, with a number of fans taking to Twitter to issue their thoughts on his arrival.
