‘Announce Championship title’ – These Leeds fans were drooling at this deadline day signing, but they were made to eat their words

Leeds United made a solid start to life under Thomas Christiansen in the 2017-18 campaign, but plenty of fans will have known that there was still one piece of transfer business that the club simply had to conduct before the summer window slammed shut.

Just four games into the season, star-man Chris Wood departed for Premier League side Burnley for a reported fee of £15million, after scoring 30 goals in all competitions the season before under Garry Monk.

This left a massive hole to be filled up front, with time running out for Christiansen to find a new, prolific forward that would help fire Leeds to promotion, but with just hours remaining, the Danish boss found his man.

Here, we take a look at the reaction when the Whites swooped to complete the season-long loan signing of Hamburg forward Pierre-Michel Lasogga.

It was a signing that certainly raised eyebrows amongst the Elland Road faithful for all the right reasons. The powerful forward was known for being an impressive striker at Bundesliga level, scoring 49 goals in just shy of 100 games for Hamburg before his switch to Elland Road.

Of course, Leeds hadn’t used the funds from Wood’s sale and spent big on Lasogga, but to attract a player who had been scoring goals in the German top-flight to Elland Road was seen as a huge coup by the club.

This got plenty of fans talking, with many expressing their delight at the latest addition…

Lasogga began his Leeds United career in magnificent fashion, scoring a brace on his debut in a 5-0 home victory over Burton Albion.

But as their season began to fizzle out, Christiansen was gone in February, and the powerful German was frozen out under Paul Heckingbottom, which capped off a turbulent time in Yorkshire for Lasogga.

He returned to Hamburg having scored 10 goals in 33 appearances for the Whites, and has since scored 19 goals in 24 appearances upon his return to his home country this term.

Plenty of Leeds fans will be kicking themselves seeing Lasogga return to his best over in Germany, but whilst at Elland Road, he certainly flattered to deceive.
