Leeds United finished the 2016/17 in seventh position after an impressive campaign.

They narrowly missed out on the play-offs by five points under Garry Monk.

Monk would depart the club in the summer, as too would that season’s top scorer Chris Wood.

Wood scored 30 goals in the competition and was sold to Burnley, opening up space in the Whites' attack for a new number nine.

And on 31 August 2017, that void was filled when a year-long deal was agreed with German side, Hamburg.

Pierre-Michel Lasogga was confirmed as Leeds’ new number nine ahead of the 2017/18 Championship campaign.

And the initial reaction to the incoming froward was positive after the departure of serial goal-getter Wood.

The initial reaction was positive, and that translated to the striker’s performances, scoring a brace on his Leeds debut in the 5-0 home win against Burton Albion on September 9, 2017.

He would score three more goals before the turn of the year to take his tally to five goals during his first 16 appearances, averaging a goal every three matches.

Hamburg were paying the majority of the German’s wages which made the deal even better from a Leeds perspective.

Lasogga picked up a knock in the defeat away to Brentford in December before returning at the end of December to play in the loss to Birmingham.

Having lost his place to Kemar Roofe in that time, the striker started for Leeds in the dramatic defeat to Millwall at Elland Road.

The 4-3 reverse would start a decline in form for the Whites' season despite Lasogga notching his sixth and seventh goals of the season.

He starred in the defeat with the Leeds fans wondering why the striker was subbed off with the game 3-2 in Leeds favour.

The powerful forward would score three goals in three matches before a drought saw him fail to score in his final ten games for Leeds as they slumped from promotion contenders to bottom half of the table fodder.

At the season’s conclusion, it was announced Lasogga would return to his parent club after the completion of his loan.

He scored ten goals in 31 appearances for the Whites in an impressive debut season in the Championship.

The initial reaction to the signing for an out-and-out number nine was of a positive nature, and that was proven correct by the Leeds fans as Lasogga become a cult hero at Elland Road during his one season at the club.
