Angus Kinnear has hit back at the suggestions that Leeds United wouldn’t deserve a place in the Premier League if the Championship season isn’t concluded.

Leeds sit top of the pile in the Championship and are desperate to play the remaining nine games of the season, with a place in the Premier League on the line for Marcelo Bielsa’s side.

However, if the season can’t be completed, Leeds are being back to win promotion on sporting merit, with the likelihood that will be points per game.

At the moment, there appears a stronger possibility the Premier League concludes, which will decide three sides to drop into the Championship and suffer relegation.

Amongst those clubs at threat are Brighton and Hove Albion and Norwich City, who have both had representatives questioning that if their season concludes and the Championship doesn’t, whether Leeds would deserve the promotion in place of the relegated sides.

In response to that, Kinnear has issued a message to the Premier League duo.

He wrote in the Yorkshire Evening Post: “To date, this has included trying to set the brilliantly audacious precedent that Premier League teams shouldn’t have to play matches if they don’t think they can win them and the equally.

“Machiavellian suggestion that a team could refuse to be relegated if they believe that the promoted team is not deserving of being their replacement.”

The Verdict

The fact Brighton and Norwich are both facing the threat of relegation in the Premier League, you can see why they are making as much noise as possible in this scenario.

However, it has been promised by the FA that relegation and promotion will go ahead, which leaves Leeds and Kinnear in a fairly comfortable position.

They’ll get their chance to win promotion properly in an ideal world, but if that can’t happen, things are falling into place.
