Angus Kinnear has joked that Leeds United head-coach Marcelo Bielsa is struggling without the focus of an ‘enemy’ at the end of each week, as the Whites continue to kick their heels amid the forced EFL postponement.

Leeds sit top of the Championship table and are just nine games away from a Premier League return, yet, the outbreak of coronavirus has put the season on hold, with no resume date confirmed yet.

Bielsa is known as a meticulous coach, detailing every single strength and weakness of Leeds’ opponents, with many questioning how the 64-year-old is spending his time during the lockdown the country finds itself on.

Writing in his weekly column for the Yorkshire Evening Post, Kinnear offered a Bielsa insight.

The Chief Executive wrote: “Marcelo has admitted that he struggles without the focus of an enemy to face at the end of each week, but his mind has been no less active in plotting our return to action.”

It remains to be seen when Leeds’ season can resume, with Bielsa looking for ways to prepare his side for the remaining nine games.

Amongst the teams they face in those remaining games are Fulham at Elland Road, with the Cottagers currently sitting third and looking like the side most likely to disrupt Leeds and West Brom in the top-two.

Additionally, Leeds have a Yorkshire derby with Barnsley, as well as a meeting with Derby County, who famously ended the Whites’ promotion push last season in the play-offs.

The Verdict

This is a nice little insight from Kinnear, with Leeds’ fans hearing little of Bielsa during this lockdown period.

Given how the Argentine’s life revolves around football, you’ve got to question what he’s up to, but as Kinnear states, he is no less active in planning for the season to continue.

He will realise how close Leeds are to promotion and won’t want to let things slip this season, particularly after how last season ended.
