An email from Leeds United CEO Angus Kinnear sent to club staff after the Championship play-off semi-final defeat to Derby County has been leaked on Twitter.
Leeds suffered play-off heartache in the second leg of their semi-final against Derby at Elland Road on Wednesday night, as the Rams came from 2-0 down to aggregate, to set up a final with Aston Villa at Wembley.
Marcelo Bielsa’s side went into the game with a 1-0 advantage from the first leg and took the lead on the night through Stuart Dallas, but Derby staged an incredible comeback to shatter their promotion hopes.
Leeds had challenged for automatic promotion all season, but just missed out on a place in the Championship’s top two, losing three of their final four matches.
The Whites had another chance at promotion in the play-offs, but Derby’s brilliant comeback at Elland Road means that their 15-year wait for a return to the Premier League continues.
Leeds CEO Kinnear expressed his disappointment in an email to club staff on Thursday, that has since been revealed on Twitter, urging them to stick together.
“I am sure like me that you feel pretty s*** this morning and it is natural to be down today,” Kinnear wrote.
“However, this no time for self pity. We should all reflect on the great season we have had both on and off the pitch.
“Whilst we have not realised our dream this year we have created the foundations which mean we will ultimately achieve it.
“Leeds United will never do things the easy way and we all know that we will have to achieve our goal with the world against us,” he added.
It has to be considered a major disappointment for Leeds to miss out on promotion this season and will be very difficult to take for everyone associated with the club, especially given the way it happened.
A season which once promised so much ultimately ended in heartbreak, but Kinnear is right, the club have to stick together and focus on coming back stronger next season.
