Queens Park Rangers defender Angel Rangel has given an insight into how the Rs have managed to turn around their form this season, reports the Football League Paper

The 35-year-old praised manager Steve McClaren for identifying the problem and being willing to change his approach in order to change their fortunes.

"At the beginning, he wanted to play a passing game, if you like, and, obviously, it didn’t work for us," Rangel said.

“We conceded so many goals, so he spotted that we had to change something, maybe get a bit more solid and start building from clean sheets.

“I can only say good things about the gaffer and the team as well, for turning things around so quickly.”

The Rs lost their first four matches of the season including a 7-1 loss to West Bromwich Albion to hurl them to the bottom of the Championship table.

In their next 13 matches, however, they have lost just twice, drawing twice and winning an impressive six times.

Only six goals have been conceded in those 13 matches as well which highlights the change of approach Rangel has spoken of.

The Spaniard moved to Loftus Road as a free agent in the summer after leaving Swansea City with whom he spent 11 years of his career.

The verdict

You have to give McClaren a huge amount of credit here.

He identified a problem with his own tactics and was willing to change them straight away. Other managers will have undoubtedly persisted with their failing tactics.

Had McClaren done that there is no doubt that they would still be down at the foot of the table.
