Sheffield United defender George Baldock is on Celtic’s list of potential summer targets as they weigh up a move, according to the Sheffield Star.
With new manager Ange Postecoglou now in place at the Scottish club, Celtic will be looking to rebuild their squad ahead of the 2021/22 SPFL campaign.
That could see them raid the EFL for talent, with the Sheffield Star reporting that Baldock’s name is on a list of potential new signings that has been presented to and approved by Postecoglou.
The report claims that the Hoops are now considering a move for the 28-year-old as part of the new manager’s focus on acquiring British talent this summer.
It is understood that Celtic’s recruitment staff have been compiling a dossier on Baldock since the Blades’ promotion to the Premier League in 2019 and the Scottish club are now said to believe that the defender could be tempted to leave Bramall Lane and move north of the border.
The defender has made 139 appearances for United since joining from MK Dons ahead of the 2017/18 campaign and has proven himself a very useful option on the right flank – both as a full-back and a wing-back.
One question about every player in the Bhoys’ first-team – Can you score 100% on this?
You feel this move could well have legs.
With the Blades down in the Championship and Chris Wilder gone, there’s uncertainty about what the future holds for the Yorkshire club and for Baldock.
The 28-year-old’s current deal expires next summer and the prospect of competing for trophies at Celtic may well be too much to resist.
Given his contract situation, the Blades may well be open to cashing in on him this summer – though that may depend on whether Slavisa Jokanovic sees him as an important part of the squad.
