Sky Sports pundit Andy Hinchcliffe has highlighted Steven Fletcher and Fernando Forestieri as the two players he expects to flourish under new Sheffield Wednesday boss Garry Monk.

Monk took charge at Hillsborough last week and faces a trip to Huddersfield Town as his first test as the Owls boss.

Speaking to the Huddersfield club website ahead of the game, Hinchcliffe singled out the forward duo as the two players he expected to flourish under the 40-year-old coach.

He said: “He’ll start at the back, that’s the foundation of any team, but you look at the likes of Steven Fletcher and Fernando Forestieri–I’ve always looked at Forestieri as a game-changer, if he can be incorporated into a solid team, he could be really effective.

"It’s a shame that his ban was upheld as he’ll miss the weekend’s game.

“I look back to when I was at Wednesday when we had the likes of Paulo Di Canio and Benito Carbone, those two won us games and I’m not saying Forestieri is as good as those two, but he is someone who is different and can light up a game.

“They’ll have to win games as a team, but I think there’ll be a number of individuals who will work well under Garry’s system, he’s very ‘hands-on’ and I think the players will look at what he’s done in the past and believe they can benefit from working under him.”

The Verdict

Fletcher has made a strong start to the season, scoring three goals already, and it looks as though he will have to continue that form if Wednesday are going to challenge for the top six under Monk.

Monk will have to wait before he can unleash Forestieri, however, as the 29-year-old is currently serving a six-match ban for using racist language.

The forward was phenomenal in his first two seasons for the Owls, providing a combined 27 goals and 14 assists, but has not been able to hit those heights since.

If Hinchcliffe is right and Forestieri can flourish under Monk, it could be a huge boost for Wednesday’s play-off push.
