Andreas Weimann reacts to match winning display in Bristol City’s 3-2 win over Millwall

Bristol City came back from 2-1 down to earn a momentum-building 3-2 victory at Ashton Gate on Sunday.

Andreas Weimann was the match winner with a hat-trick to take his tally to 12 in the league this season.

The Robins had won just once in their last five outings heading into the clash with the Lions and supporters would have been concerned when their former striker Benik Afobe put Millwall in front from 12 yards, but in Weimann they have a reliable second tier goalscorer and his hat-trick meant they rose to 14th place in victory.

Bristol City have been tricky to call this season, looking very assured and confident at home, after ending their long wait for a victory at Ashton Gate, but with their away form falling off a cliff.

Weimann will be hoping that the comeback win can spur them on for a far more positive 2022, the Austrian took to Instagram to share his reaction to the victory.

He posted: “Not a bad way to start the year. Big 3 points today.”

Nigel Pearson’s reign at Bristol City has been very up and down, as was Dean Holden’s before him, in such an inconsistent side having senior players like Andreas Weimann setting the standards at the top of the pitch can be crucial to enable the team to push in the right direction.

Weimann is now just two strikes away from reaching 50 goals in the Championship. The Austrian has shown his class at Watford, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Derby County previously but looks to be at the peak of his powers with the Robins.

Equally comfortable playing off of either flank or through the middle, Weimann’s goals have ensured that the Robins have not been dragged into a relegation battle. In a season with so many excellent goalscorers in the second tier, Weimann will have his sights set on hitting 20 league goals for the first time in his career.

The Robins take on Fulham back-to-back, next in the FA Cup and then the league in looking to build on their positive start to the year.
