Bristol City striker Andreas Weimann has sent a message of support to former sides Aston Villa and Derby, amidst their contrasting emotions following Monday's play-off final.

It is Villa who are now celebrating a return to the Premier League, after goals from Anwar El Ghazi and John McGinn gave them a 2-1 win over the Rams in Monday's promotion decider, despite Martyn Waghorn's faint deflection off a Jack Marriott shot giving Frank Lampard's side some late hope of a remarkable comeback.

Villa however hung on to end a three year wait for a return to the top flight, and taking to Twitter after the match Weimann, who played for both sides, was keen to send both his congratulations to Villa and commiserations to Derby.

In total, Weimann made 130 appearances and scored 24 goals for Villa between 2009 and 2015, leaving to join The Rams that summer, making 88 appearances and scoring nine goals for the Pride Park club before moving to current side Bristol City last year.

The verdict

It's always good to see players show their affection for their former clubs, and fans of both sides will appreciate Weimann's message.

You feel however that one set of supporters will enjoy reading what the striker has to say much more than the other.
