‘An utter rock’, ‘Superb’ – Returning Leeds United man draws praise from plenty of fans

Many Leeds United supporters have been suggesting that Gaetano Berardi was one of the Whites’ standout performers in their 1-0 win at Middlesbrough on Wednesday night.

Berardi, much like last season, has found himself as more of a squad player than a regular starter under Marcelo Bielsa, but the defender has still managed to play a key role within the Whites’ squad in terms of filling in for injuries and suspensions and offering the option to rotate the defence.

QUIZ: Do you know where these 15 Leeds United players signed from?

First of all, where did Leeds sign Patrick Bamford from?

Against Middlesbrough, Berardi was brought into the starting line-up by Bielsa at the heart of Leeds’ defence alongside Liam Cooper, with Ben White having been moved into the holding midfield role in the absence of the influential Kalvin Phillips.

Leeds had kept back-to-back clean sheets in wins against Reading and Bristol City, and so Bielsa would have been hoping that the Whites would be able to maintain their recent defensive record, despite having to make alterations to the back four for the trip to Middlesbrough.

Berardi delivered a really strong defensive performance throughout the ninety minutes at the Riverside, with the 31-year-old offering a commanding presence and ensuring that Leeds were able to prevent Middlesbrough from hurting them, as they looked to break down their defence.

It was a performance which saw the defender put his body on the line when needed and ensure that Leeds were able to deal with any balls into the penalty area, which shows just how important an option he is to Bielsa’s side when he is needed.

Here then, we take a look at what Leeds fans have been saying about Berardi’s performance on social media…
