Reading Football Club are on the verge of announcing Rio Ave boss Jose Gomes as the club's new manager, according to the Reading Chronicle.

The Royals have agreed a compensation package with the Portuguese side and are believed to have paid around €1million for the 48-year-old's services.

Having parted company with Paul Clement a fortnight ago, Reading will be hoping that Gomes is the man to turn their fortunes around and lift the Berkshire club away from the relegation zone.

Here, we discuss if Gomes is the right man for Reading...

Chris Gallagher

It's a tough one.

On one hand he will be thrown into the deep end, going into a league and club he knows nothing about and he needs to make an immediate impression.

However, Reading have gone for supposed reliable managers in the past and it hasn't worked, so I think it's a risk worth taking and an exciting time for the fans.

Jay Taylor

Not at all.

It might seem like a marquee appointment but I can’t see how this helps Reading.

It might be an initial upturn in form if anything but it just doesn't feel like the best decision they could have made.

I think they should have gone for an experienced Championship manager.

But, if it turns out to work out well, then I, and I’m sure many others, will be left to look foolish.

Jacob Potter

He is a gamble but could be what they need.

Gomes could be just what they need to help fire up an underperforming group of players currently at the club.

It's been doom and gloom at the club in recent seasons and Gomes is a manager that isn't proven in English football, but you've got to give him a chance.

However, if it goes wrong it could have catastrophic consequences as Reading could find themselves in League One in a matter of months.

Louie Chandler

It seems like an unnecessary risk.

Personally I feel like what the Royals needed most was an experienced second-tier coach to see them through to the end of the season.

This could seriously cost them

George Harbey

I just think this is such a risk.

There are managers out there who have had success at this level before, the likes of Steve Bruce and Slavisa Jokanovic are both without jobs.

If I was a Reading fan, I'd feel much more assured with them at the helm instead of an unproven manager like Gomes.
