Reading have had their fair share of managers that simply haven't hit the heights originally expected of them over the years at the Madejski Stadium.

The likes of Jose Gomes and Jaap Stam were unable to build on impressive starts to life with the Berkshire-based club, with the Royals now having Mark Bowen in charge at this moment in time.

However, one manager that will remain in high regard amongst the club's supporters is Steve Coppell, with the former Crystal Palace boss guiding the Royals to the first promotion into the Premier League in the club's history during the 2005/06 season.

Coppell's side did it in style as well, as they concluded their league campaign with 106 points, which is a record points total, which still exists to this day.

But the Royals weren't done there, as they finished eighth in the Premier League in their first season in the top-flight, which shows just how much of an impact Coppell had on the squad, despite not having the finances that some of the teams they competed against had that season.

One player that played a key role in their promotion-winning season and their impressive first campaign in the top-flight was Stephen Hunt, who went on to make 167 appearances in total for Reading.

When quizzed on his memories of working under the management of Coppell by Football League World's Jacob Potter, Stephen Hunt issued high-praise for the former Royals boss and labelled it as 'an honour' to work for Coppell.

The Verdict:

This doesn't surprise me at all.

Coppell was clearly respected by almost all of the Reading squad in his time with the club, and Hunt was one of the players that the former Royals boss trusted whilst they were in the Championship and the Premier League.

Coppell remains a legend at the Madejski Stadium, and will do for the rest of time I'd imagine, as he was the manager that guided the club to their first ever promotion into the Premier League.

You only have to imagine what he could do with the current Royals squad, who arguably have better individuals than some of the title-winning 2005/06 season.
