Football League World's Leeds United fan pundit Charlie Wells has insisted that the Whites versus Manchester United is still one of the country's biggest matches ahead of their pre-season clash in Australia on Wednesday.

Marcelo Bielsa's side touched down in Perth, Western Australia, on Monday as they continue their preparations for next season with the Red Devils clash the pinnacle of the summer programme.

"Leeds versus Manchester United is, and always will be, one of the biggest games in England," the regular punter told Football League World.

"Not only because of the rivalry between the teams over the years but also the hatred between the fans, cities and counties.

"Yorkshire versus Lancashire is one of the oldest rivalries in all sports. Rugby league, rugby union, cricket and football. They all bring an extra special feeling to a game involving sides from these counties but none quite like Leeds versus Man United."

The two sides have not met competitively since September 2011 when the Red Devils ran-out 3-0 winners at Elland Road in the League Cup.

However, in January of the previous year, Leeds took home the spoils in an iconic 1-0 win at Old Trafford in the FA Cup third-round - and you can bet that a few players will want to recreate the heroics of Jermain Beckford that day.

And Wells believes his side will make their fans proud during the showpiece event.

"I believe Leeds will give a good account of themselves in the game on Wednesday with it being Bielsa’s second season with the team," he said.

"My main hope is that the young players, which are involved step-up, enjoy the occasion and show what they can do.

"Leeds have a small squad of senior players so we’re going to be relying on these youngsters a lot this year as we did last season."

However, despite falling out of the Premier League title race in recent seasons, there is little doubting the large gulf that still exists between the two sides.

The Whites have not played in the top-flight since 2004 but Wells still believes Leeds will have a great chance thanks to a couple of areas of weakness in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's set-up.

"Man United have some great attacking options and I’m sure Leeds will be wary of that," he said.

"That being said, Man United’s current options in midfield and defence don’t scare me. At times they looked disjointed in midfield and struggled to find a settled unit.

"At the back they have obvious problems and I believe that if Leeds can win the ball back and play direct on the counter, with the holes in United’s midfield and the lack of respect their defenders will show us, I think Leeds could grab a few goals. Fingers crossed."
