Aston Villa are interested in signing Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips for £14million this summer, according to The Telegraph.

The 23-year-old was one of the standout players for Leeds in the Championship last season, after being transformed into a defensive midfielder until the guidance of Marcelo Bielsa.

Villa boss Dean Smith is looking to considerably strengthen his squad this summer following promotion to the Premier League and has prioritised a defensive midfielder, after the departures of Glenn Whelan and Mile Jedinak.

This latest report states that Smith has made Phillips one of his top transfer targets for the summer and that Villa are ready to make an official bid for the player within the next few weeks.

So would Phillips be a good signing for Villa? We discuss...

Toby Wilding

"I think this would be a good signing for Villa.

"Phillips has impressed hugely for Leeds last season and was one of those who played a key part in their push for Premier League promotion.

"This would now give him an opportunity to prove he can operate at the top level, and would give Villa a solid third option for their 4-3-3 formation alongside Grealish and McGinn should they continue with that approach next season."

Kealan Hughes

"He would be an excellent addition to the squad.

"Phillips basis his game on breaking up play and winning the ball back, and Villa currently lack that type of midfielder, so Phillips would make a real difference.

"He is ready for the step up to the Premier after a few years of showing his quality in the Championship and Dean Smith would really be able to get the best out of him."

George Brooks

"Phillips would be an excellent signing for Aston Villa. He was excellent for Leeds in the Championship last season and I think he's definitely capable of making the step up to the Premier League.

"Bielsa was able to get the best out of Phillips last season and turned him into one of the best defensive midfield players in the Championship.

"Villa need to strengthen in that position after losing Whelan and Jedinak, and Phillips would be the perfect replacement for both of them. He would be able to slot into their midfield three perfectly alongside Grealish and McGinn."
