Nottingham Forest midfielder Ryan Yates is edging closer to a January exit, with a move to Portsmouth on the cards for the 21-year-old.

According to the Mirror’s live transfer blog (19/12, 11:51), Yates’ move to Fratton Park will be on loan, although there could be a permanent deal at Portsmouth, should Kenny Jackett’s side secure promotion.

Yates has made just one League Cup appearance this season under Aitor Karanka, but recently signed a new three-year deal, highlighting Forest’s faith in him.

So, is a potential permanent move a surprise?

We discuss…

Jay Taylor

I am not surprised, to be honest – but the impending loan move to Portsmouth will give the midfielder the chance to showcase what he can do.

In doing that he will either earn himself a permanent move to the south coast or have other clubs in for him if he performs well during the second half of the season.

It was inevitable really that Yates would leave and it has come six months too late.

George Harbey

It’s a terrible move by Forest.

Yates has already proved himself at a lower level and definitely deserves a chance in the first team.

He has a massive future ahead and it’s a baffling decision.

Alfie Burns

For me, it’s quite surprising and highlights the short-term focus of the football club.

Yates has great potential and if he departs permanently in the summer, it would be an awful move for Forest to make.

This could haunt the club for years to come.
