Barnsley have issued an emotional message to Adam Hammill, after it was confirmed that the midfielder would be leaving Oakwell this summer.

Hammill’s second spell at Oakwell came to an end following the 2017/18 campaign, with Barnsley’s retained list – announced yesterday – confirming that the 30-year-old would be heading for the exit door.

The Tykes have now issued a statement on Hammill’s departure, thanking the midfielder for his efforts over the last three years. An emotional look back over Hammill’s spell at Barnsley is signed off with the club writing: “So long, Adam, it was an absolute privilege.”

Hammill’s final year at Oakwell has coincided with Barnsley’s relegation back to League One, with the Tykes now preparing for a return to the third-tier of English football.

The 30-year-old featured on 42 occasions last season, scoring one goal in a disappointing campaign at Oakwell.

In total, Hammill has made 199 appearances for Barnsley, scoring 26 goals for the club.

Alongside Hammill, Andy Yiadom, Matt Mills, Nick Townsend, Adam Lund and Louis Rowe are amongst 14 others departing Oakwell this summer.

The loan spells of Gary Gardner, Connor Mahoney and Oli McBurnie have also ended, with that trio returning to their respective clubs.

The Verdict

Hammill has been a good servant to Barnsley, giving the club some of their best memories in recent years.

There is no doubt that Barnsley’s supporters will be gutted to see the winger leave, with everyone at Oakwell sure to echo the club’s kind words.

The announcement of Barnsley’s retained list is the beginning of a huge summer for the club.
