Amid Everton’s transfer interest, Swansea need to forget the cash and stand firm

Swansea are set for a summer of uncertainty, with potential outgoings in terms of both players and the manager set to dominate the headlines for a few weeks at least.

Trusted source Pete O’Rourke for Football Insider reported recently that Everton are set to stun Swansea City with a double swoop for Daniel James and Matt Grimes.

Daniel James has been central to transfer gossip for most of 2019, with a host of clubs interested in his signature. It looks like he is a certainty to depart, which will be a huge blow for Swansea, but one that could reap them financial rewards.

Matt Grimes, on the other hand, is not a guaranteed departure, and with money set to follow for Dan James, it would be a silly decision for Swansea to part with Grimes easily.

Instead, they should forget the cash and stand tall on keeping Grimes.

Grimes has had an excellent season this year and won the club’s Player of the Season, making 47 appearances in all competitions in a very consistent manner.

Since his move to the Championship from Exeter, Grimes has improved year on year and at age 23, he is at the perfect age in his career to kick on.

A move to Everton would stall his progress – he would not play every week, so he would end up watching a lot of football from the stands.

Moving on to next season, Swansea will enter the season as a favourite promotion after a positive year back in the Championship after their relegation.

The Swans narrowly missed out on the play-offs after a good end to season, but the large majority of people thought that Potter had done an excellent job in his first year, getting Swansea to play a good brand of football.

With Potter’s future in doubt, Swansea need to tie down their stars for next season – Grimes is an excellent talent and whoever is in charge could build the team around him, with the target being promotion.
