Sky Bet League One club Shrewsbury Town are having a look at ex-Leicester City defender Zak Whitbread who is currently a free agent, according to HITC Sport.
Whitbread is currently training with Micky Mellon’s team as the central defender looks to win himself a contract, following his departure from Derby County in the summer.
The ex-Liverpool youth player made 11 appearances for the Rams last season but a series of injuries restricted his time out on the pitch for the club.
The Shrews are currently 14th in League One and have taken to life back in League One with relative ease.
They trailed Colchester United 2-0 at half-time on Saturday but produced a tremendous second-half performance to eventually run out 4-2 winners.
Whitbread would add some much needed experience to a relatively young Shrews back line and would also fill a void left by Connor Goldson who joined Brighton and Hove Albion in the summer.
Despite having one of the smaller budgets in the league the signing of the American defender would prove that the club are still capable of attracting good quality players to the Shropshire-based outfit.
Shrewsbury Town currently sit in 14th place in Sky Bet League One, having accumulated 14 points from 12 league games so far this season.
