After their relegation into the third tier of English football at the end of the 2015/16 season, Bolton Wanderers were in need of a brilliant summer to restore the faith in the club.

Things got off to a good start with the appointment of highly rated Bradford City manager Phil Parkinson to permanently replace Neil Lennon.

He wasted no time in reshaping the Trotters' squad, bringing in a total of 11 new faces as he put together a squad to challenge for automatic promotion.

Two of those new faces were goalkeepers, one was Mark Howard from Sheffield United and the other was Peterborough United's Ben Alnwick.

This is FLW Rewind where we take a look back at a big moment in a club's history, analyse the initial reaction and document what happened next.

It is Alnwick we will be looking at today.

The ginger shot-stopper had spent two seasons with League One rivals Peterborough, making 97 appearances for them in that time.

But he opted against renewing his contract at the club, moving to the Macron on a free transfer on deadline day.

The fans could not decide what to think of the transfer, with some fuming with the signing whilst others saw the benefit:

It turned out to be a very good signing for Parkinson's side.

Despite being signed as back up to Howard, Alnwick quickly made the number one spot his own, starting 25 of the 46 league matches, missing the last seven thanks to an injury.

But Bolton were promoted to the Championship as League One Champions at the end of the season and they would have been forgiven for looking for a 'keeper with more second tier experience.

But they stuck with Alnwick and it is a good job he did.

He continued as the club's first choice and showed himself to be well up to the challenges of the Championship, making 39 league appearances and winning the club's player of the season award at the end of the season.
