“Always gives a 7/10 performance” – Ipswich Town fan pundit identifies Tractor Boys’ most improved player

This article is part of Football League World’s Terrace Talk‘ series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Despite pre-season expectations that they would be challenging for automatic promotion from League One, Ipswich Town have fallen short of expectations and then some in the 2021-22 season.

The Tractor Boys underwent a complete squad overhaul under Paul Cook last summer, with many proven Championship-level players arriving at Portman Road.

But results went awry under Cook and he departed his role as manager in December, with ex-Manchester United coach Kieran McKenna replacing him.

McKenna initially got some very positive results but a play-off challenge eventually died out, and no wins in their last five outings consigned the Suffolk side to another season in League One.

There have been some performers who have stood out more than others though, and one that FLW’s Ipswich fan pundit Henry believes has improved more than most is defender Janoi Donacien.

The Saint Lucian defender was frozen out by Paul Lambert last season and ended up loaned out to Fleetwood Town, but he’s been a key part this season for Ipswich under two managers and Henry has been impressed with what he’s seen.

“There’s really only one option here and that’s Janoi Donacien.

“Loved the renaissance – it’s not to be said that he was poor before or average, we just didn’t get to see much of him.

“He was offloaded nearly at every turn since his arrival under Paul Hurst – Lambert moved him on, sent him out on loan a few times, (Paul) Cook came in and gave him his opportunity at right-back, did really well and impressed a lot.

“He always gave a solid performance and also under McKenna in the right centre-back position he’s really nailed that down and looks like a starter week in, week out – always gives a 7/10 performance and potentially the first name on the team-sheet every week.

“From not seeing him much in the last few seasons, you’d probably say he is the most improved player.”

The Verdict

There’s several players you could say that haven’t performed to expectations for Ipswich this season – Donacien isn’t one of those though.

He probably feared for his Tractor Boys future after being farmed out on loan again last season, but Paul Cook giving him a clean slate has done wonders.

Donacien has looked comfortable all season and has played in every single league match under McKenna and even captained the club in one game, which shows that the Northern Irishman trusts him.

Ipswich’s squad will change next season, but expect Donacien to be a big part of McKenna’s plans.
