Tottenham could struggle to find one of their players who would be willing to join Swansea as part of a swap deal to bring Joe Rodon to North London, Darren Bent has warned.

Rodon has emerged as a target for Jose Mourinho's side in the final few days of the summer transfer window, as they look to strengthen their central defensive options.

But with Swansea reportedly demanding £18million for Rodon, it has been suggested that Spurs could include a player as part of their offer as an attempt to reduce the financial cost of the deal.

Bent however, believes that that could create something of an issue for Spurs, given that any player leaving the club for Swansea as part of the deal, would be dropping down a division.

Speaking to Football Insider about the possibility of a swap deal for Rodon, the former Tottenham forward said: “I guess it’s one of those things where they need to find a player at Spurs who’s happy to drop down to the Championship.

“I think that’s going to be the hard thing, it’s all well and good offering these pieces to Swansea as kind of a sweetener in the deal but you’ve got to find players who are willing to drop into the Championship and give up their Premier League credentials.

“That’s going to be the stumbling block but if they can get it over the line and find pieces that are willing to do that, that would be really, really good.”

As things stand, Swansea are currently fourth in the Championship table, with ten points from their four league games so far this season.

The Verdict

It is hard to argue with the point that Bent is making here.

You imagine there are unlikely to be too many players at Spurs who are going to want to make the step down to the Championship this summer, given the trajectory the club could be about to head on following a hugely promising transfer window.

Add to that the fact that a move to Swansea would likely mean a player is likely to have to take a drop in wages from he is on in North London, and it could be hard to convince any of them to make that move.

However, the fact that a transfer to Swansea ought to at least offer a fringe Spurs player the chance of more regular game time, and their promising start to the campaign could also help tempt some players, suggesting it may not be long before the Welsh club are in the Premier League again.
