Plenty of Birmingham City fans have taken to Twitter to react to Liam Ridgwell's message after the 35-year-old revealed that he has decided to retire from football.

The defender, who left Southend United last month following a brief stint at Roots Hall, enjoyed a five-year spell with the Blues.

After joining the club from Aston Villa, Ridgewell became a mainstay in Birmingham's starting eleven during his debut season as he featured on 37 occasions in all competitions.

Whilst the defender was unable to prevent the Blues from suffering relegation to the Championship, he helped his side secure an immediate return to the top-flight in 2009 by making 36 league appearances.

Arguably the highlight of Ridgewell's career was the 2011 League Cup final as he started in Birmingham's dramatic 2-1 victory over Arsenal at Wembley Stadium.

After leaving Birmingham in 2012, the defender played for the likes of West Bromwich Albion, Portland Timbers and Hull City before joining Southend last summer.

Without a club since his decision to part ways with the Shrimpers, Ridgewell revealed yesterday on Twitter that he has opted to call time on his professional career.

The former Blues man posted: "Football has given me the best life any little boy could wish for.

"There have been some massive highs and lows but not it's time to hang up my boots and move on to the next chapter of my career."
