Wolverhampton Wanderers are eyeing a January move for Burnley midfielder Josh Brownhill.

As per our FLW exclusive, Wolves are considering making an offer for the 26-year-old in the next transfer window having missed out on Brownhill this summer.

The midfielder has had a strong start to the season for Vincent Kompany's side, playing ten Championship matches, scoring four goals and registering two assists.

With that in mind, below, three of our FLW writers have offered their verdict on the links, and discusses whether or not the Clarets will be able to keep hold of the midfielder come January.

You can certainly see why Wolves would be interested in Brownhill.

At times already this season he has looked like a Premier League player playing in the Championship and that's further evidenced by the goals and assists he's gathering from midfield.

Can the Clarets keep hold of him? I think they might be able to, but it all depends on where Burnley are at come January in terms of league position.

As long as Vincent Kompany has the club in play-off/promotion contention, I believe Brownhill will want to see out the season with the club and then reassess in the summer.

If Burnley find themselves, say, 11th when the January window arrives though, you wouldn't be at all surprised if Brownhill felt the Wolves move was one that was too good to turn down.

Wolves’ options in midfield are quite limited, especially since the departure of Leander Dendoncker on deadline day.

Brownhill would be a solid replacement for the Belgian, with the 26-year old possessing plenty of Premier League experience.

He would also likely be an affordable option, as Burnley could possibly be tempted into a sale for a fee in the region of £15 million.

The midfielder has performed well in Vincent Kompany’s possession-heavy side, earning two assists so far this season.

It would be a loss for Burnley, but one that they could be able to swallow for a good fee.

Wolves would be getting a really useful squad player that would really strengthen Bruno Lage's options in the centre of the pitch if they signed the Burnley man.

Josh Cole

Brownhill would certainly be a useful addition to Wolves’ squad as he managed to produce some promising performances in the Premier League last season.

The midfielder provided five direct goal contributions and made 2.1 tackles per fixture as he averaged a WhoScored match rating of 6.86 in the top-flight.

For Burnley’s sake, they should be looking to do everything in their power to keep Brownhill at Turf Moor in January.

By convincing the 26-year-old to stay, the Clarets could potentially launch a push for promotion with him in their side.
