Oldham Athletic are nurturing the talent of Alfie McCalmont, with the eyes of Leeds United on the Latics and their use of the midfielder this season.

Leeds' promotion to the Premier League pushed McCalmont down the pecking order in many ways, with opportunities for the midfielder to build on his senior appearances at Elland Road looking slim.

We check in on the 20-year-old in this article, asking a few questions that might be popping up.

How's he getting on out on loan in the EFL?

Steady.

The moment Leeds talked about sending boys like McCalmont out on loan into the EFL, you'd expect them to take the plunge in the Championship.

However, for McCalmont it has been League Two football, where he's linked up with Harry Kewell's Oldham.

In total, the midfielder has started four League Two fixtures and made one appearances off the bench. Kewell has played him in his favoured position and he's registered an assist in the win over Bolton.

There has been a start and another 90 minutes in the FA Cup's early rounds for McCalmont, who has scored twice in the Papa John's Trophy too.

That brace came against Bradford City, where his late goals took the tie away from the Bantams and secured Oldham a 3-1 win.

Additionally, McCalmont remains a feature in-and-around the Northern Ireland squads.

20 quiz questions about Leeds United’s current squad that Whites fans should be getting correct

Has he got a Leeds United future?

This is the key debate around a lot of Leeds' loanees.

Marcelo Bielsa rates McCalmont highly. It was reported that had Leeds lost Kalvin Phillips in the summer of 2019, McCalmont would have been promoted into the first-team rather than Bielsa signing a replacement.

That's massive backing for the youngster, but circumstances have changed now Leeds have been promoted.

Leeds are not planning on yo-yoing between the Premier League and Championship and, if they establish themselves like they hope to do, it's difficult to see McCalmont making the grade anytime soon.

His age is the biggest problem. Others that are around his age like Jamie Shackleton are still with Leeds and have played in the Premier League, so you might ask if McCalmont was ever going to make the grade at Leeds, would he be doing it already?

It's stupid to write him off and we won't do that, but there's a lot of developing to be done if the Northern Irishman is to be a feature in the Leeds midfield anytime soon.
