After promising start to this season for the Canaries, the hope of an instant return to the top flight has slowly diminished following a run of three victories in the last ten outings.

Norwich City currently sit 9th in the Sky Bet Championship table, five points off the top six but their recent lacklustre performances have led to a large majority criticising manager Alex Neil.

The Scotsman made a number of high calibre signings last summer in the attempt to build a promotion challenge back to the Premier League, with the likes of midfielders Sergi Cano and Alex Pritchard as well as striker Nelson Oliveira arriving at Carrow Road six months ago.

Perhaps Neil now has to use the January transfer window to save his job and revive Norwich's ambitions.

The top division in England is the ideal place to get several temporary signings, which tend to represent better value for money in January.

Here are three players that Alex Neil should look to at least bring in on loan from the Premier League over the next month.

David Nugent

Having asked a few Norwich fans what position they need to improve most upon, I got the idea that an alternative option up front would be highly welcomed by the faithful.

There's no one more equipped for their current situation than out-of-favour Middlesbrough striker David Nugent.

The Championship is the 31-year-old's forte; he knows it like the back of his hand.

If the Canaries want to get out of the difficulties they're in then manager Alex Neil would win over a lot of supporters by bringing in Nugent on loan.

He has experience at both Premier League and second tier level, has international experience as well (albeit just the one cap) and provides a different way of playing which would allow Neil to shake things up if they happened to be trailing in a game.

James Tarkowski

Tarkowski is staying put for now

Tarkowski is finding game time hard to come by at Burnley and with a decent track record at Brentford in the Championship, Norwich City would be the perfect place to go out on loan.

The 24-year-old signed for the Clarets in February of last year from the Bees for a fee believed to be in the region of £6 million.

James Tarkowski is a commanding centre back who's only made eight appearances for Burnley this season but all of those have been off the bench - he's yet to start a single league game.

The Canaries defence seems to be fragile at the moment, and they need reinforcements at the back.

However, I don't think his current club would allow for him to depart permanently as he looks to be a potential replacement for Michael Keane if the .

Alex Neil needs to get his act together and enquire about Tarkowski's availability.

Tiago Ilori

Tiago Illori is currently rotting away in the Liverpool under-23 squad after struggling to make an impact at Anfield.

Since arriving at Merseyside in 2013, the Portuguese youth international is yet to appear in a red shirt for a competitive game.

Tiago Ilori would benefit from the experience he would gain from the Championship.

The 23-year-old has previously had unsuccessful loan spells at Granada, Bordeaux and Aston Villa but Norwich will be hoping to get the best out of him.
