Alex Gilbey opened his account for the season in adding Charlton Athletic's second goal late on in a comfortable victory over Ipswich Town.

The 26-year-old was outstanding throughout and topped off the performance with a brilliantly finished goal after receiving the ball on the edge of the box from Elliot Lee.

The Addicks were rampant back on their home patch and the scoreline flattered the Tractor Boys going into the 88th minute before Gilbey's strike sealed the three points.

The former Milton Keynes Dons engine roomer took to Twitter to express his emotions after the game.

Gilbey posted: "That felt good."

Charlton will be hoping to make it three straight home league wins under Johnnie Jackson when they welcome newly promoted Cambridge United on Saturday. Mark Bonner's men surprised many with a 5-0 win at Cheltenham Town on Tuesday evening, building an eight point cushion over the relegation zone in the process.

In combination with Elliot Lee and George Dobson, Gilbey has hugely contributed to midfield being the strongest area of the pitch for Charlton in the last couple of months as the squad set their sights on a distant play-off push. The 26-year-old has missed opportunities in recent weeks but will be delighted to get his first goal of the season under his belt.

The Verdict

Ipswich Town were not at the races on Tuesday evening and Alex Gilbey was the driving force in dominating Sam Morsy and Lee Evans in central areas. It was a real all-round performance from Gilbey, protecting the back three with a lot of duels and ball recoveries along with plenty of unselfish running, and dragging the team forwards in central areas.

The 26-year-old was particularly impressive in spreading the play to the likes of Diallang Jaiyesimi and Jayden Stockley, completing seven, of eight attempted, accurate passes into the final third. It was a complete display that his caretaker manager Johnnie Jackson would have been proud of himself.
